Last May the Alabama Campaign announced a name change, becoming the Alabama Campaign for Adolescent Sexual Health (formerly the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy). At the same time our national partners revealed the newly renamed Sex Ed for All Month (formerly Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month) for the month of May. These name changes were intentional and reveal a trauma-informed lens through which we view sexual health education. Sex education should be about creating healthy relationships, bodily autonomy, consent, and communication among partners. And of course, we also want to give young people the knowledge and skills to prevent an unintended pregnancy or STI/HIV.

We are excited to celebrate the second annual Sex Ed for All Month this year. Even with our current health crisis, we believe there is room for conversations and education about sex and relationships. Young people need information even during a global pandemic. And so, even though we can’t be together, we have several activities planned for Sex Ed for All Month.

Sex Ed Trivia: Join us on our Facebook page on May 6 for Sex Ed Trivia! The trivia questions will be posted in our Facebook Stories and will be available for 24 hours. Test your knowledge!

Sex Ed in Alabama: Join us via Zoom on May 20 at 11:00am (CST) for a recap of sex education in Alabama (the good, the bad, and the ugly), efforts being made to improve sex education, and of course some fun knowledge and skills building! This is a FREE event, but you must pre-register to attend this workshop.

Sex Ed stories: Throughout the month of May we will be gathering and sharing sex education stories. If you received sex education in Alabama, please fill out this Google form to share your story! Feel free to share with others, especially young people.

Our national partners also have virtual events happening this month. Stay in touch via social media to see more events as they come up.

As Executive Director Christina Clark Okarmus said in our press release last year, “We envision sexually healthy people and communities throughout Alabama, and the way to reach that vision is by building knowledge, skills, and access through medically-accurate, age-appropriate, inclusive sexual health education that is free of bias and shame.” Let’s build that future together starting this month![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
