Last week, the Senate unveiled the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 – a bill that, if passed, would replace the Affordable Health Care Act (better known as Obamacare). The Better Care Reconciliation Act could have devastating effects on women. The bill would cut Medicaid funding, which could disproportionately impact the large number of low income women and women of color who rely on the program for care, including maternity care. The bill could also affect maternity care costs in general – opponents of the bill worry that individual plans that cover maternity care could greatly increase in price, making coverage unaffordable. The bill would not affect the contraceptive mandate included in Obamacare; however, if women lose their health insurance because they cannot afford it, they would no longer have access to family planning.
