About the Alabama Campaign

The Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (doing business as the Alabama Campaign for Adolescent Sexual Health) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded on the belief that reducing the rate of teen pregnancy is one of the most direct means available to improve overall child well-being and reduce persistent poverty. Over the years we have expanded our mission to address adolescent sexual health more broadly.

The Alabama Campaign was founded in 1999, and incorporated in 2002, in response to a deep concern among community leaders that Alabama had one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the United States. Alabama has made progress in reducing teen pregnancy since 1999, but even with that progress we remain ranked among the states with the highest rates of teen pregnancy. Addressing adolescent sexual health requires the thoughtful and deliberate attention of parents/caregivers, youth, community leaders, educators, policy makers, faith leaders, and others who have an interest in the healthy development of Alabama’s children and youth. Christina is committed to the right of young people in Alabama to receive sexual health education that is medically accurate, age-appropriate, inclusive, and free of bias and shame. She cares deeply about the ability of all people to have the knowledge, skills, and access to services to take care of their health.

Christina has been working in sexual and reproductive health for over a decade. She previously served as the Policy and Outreach Manager for the Alabama Campaign where she worked primarily on policy change and training around sexual health education for Alabama’s youth. Christina is an experienced trainer and presenter, working with audiences across Alabama to bring sexual health content to young people. Christina has worked with the Gift of Life Foundation as Interim Director of their sexual health education program, VOICES for Alabama’s Children as Outreach Coordinator, and the Alabama Birth Coalition as President of the Board of Directors. She has also held internships with various government agencies and political candidates.

Christina is a member of ADPH Family Planning Advisory Committee, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), Doula Training International, and Pi Gamma Mu. She has her Master of Public Policy from the University of Northern Iowa and her Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Brittney is a passionate health educator, consultant, and adjunct instructor with over 10 years of expertise in sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, adolescent health, and minority and women’s health issues. She has worked in the non-profit, local government, private sectors, and academia throughout her professional career.

Brittney has considerable expertise in program design, development, implementation, management, and evaluation. She works with diverse clients and communities on programs that advance health and social change, focusing on public health education addressing HIV/STIs, sexual health, adolescent health, LGBTQ/minority health, and more.

Brittney is a lifelong learner. She received her Masters in Health Promotion from the University of Alabama and holds the credential of Master Certified Health Education Specialist. She is a PhD Candidate at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Health Education and Promotion program.

Meagan Lyle

Meagan believes that young people deserve accurate, comprehensive and inclusive sexual health education so that they can make informed decisions about their lives, their bodies, and their relationships to others. She believes that young people must be supported with relevant resources, services, and age-appropriate lessons/skills-building workshops that are free from shame, bias and judgement.

Meagan was previously an Instructor in the Gender and Race Studies Department at the University of Alabama. In that role, she mentored undergraduate students, developed lesson plans and syllabi, and facilitated large group discussions on various topics including but not limited to: the history of the feminist movement, gender identity, sexuality, reproductive justice and gender based violence. While teaching, Meagan completed a graduate degree in Gender and Race Studies. In 2018, Meagan co-founded the Burdock Book Collective - an intersectional feminist bookstore in Birmingham that aims to create radically inclusive community building and organizing space around literature written by authors of different identities and life experiences. Since then, she has facilitated many book clubs, coordinated arts workshops and author reading events, managed relationships with local partners and co-started the Books to Prison and Pen Pal program, which aims to intervene in the isolation of prison in Alabama.

Meagan has her Master's degree in Women's Studies from the Gender and Race Studies Department at the University of Alabama and her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a focus on Global Environmental Policy. She is a member of the Triota Honors Society and a member of Southerners on New Ground.

Terryn Abner

Terryn has had a passion for helping young people for as long as she can remember. Through her faith journey, she has found the work of teaching people about the sacredness of their bodies and education on sexual health has been apart of that. She believes that being an advocate for youth relies on teaching them about sexual health and advocacy. She believes that accurate and relevant resources are necessary and life-giving to youth who need them.

Terryn is passionate about adolescent sexual health as a native Alabamian who did not have these resources in her school system and community. She advocates for making sure education, resources, and access are provided to all youth regardless of where they come from.

Terryn has received her Bachelor of Arts in Religion as well as two minors in Communication Studies and English at Huntingdon College. She spent her college career as part of both faith communities and social justice organizations.
